The SportPersonalities Framework
The SportPersonalities assessment categorizes athletes into 16 distinct sport profiles based on four fundamental pillars:
This pillar determines the source of your motivation. Extrinsic (E) athletes are driven by external victory, recognition, and tangible rewards. Intrinsic (I) athletes are fuelled by an internal passion for mastery and the love of the process itself.
This pillar defines your primary opponent. Other-Referenced (O) athletes thrive on the strategic challenge of defeating a direct rival. Self-Referenced (S) athletes measure success against their own past performance and personal bests.
This pillar reveals your method for problem-solving. Tactical (T) athletes are meticulous planners who win through strategy and preparation. Reactive (R) athletes are adaptive improvisers who find genius in the chaos of the moment.
This pillar determines the environment where you feel most energised. Collaborative (C) athletes draw strength from being part of a cohesive team with shared goals. Autonomous (A) athletes are at their best when working independently with full autonomy.
The Four Groups
- The Crew: Collaborative + Self-Referenced. Team-oriented athletes who thrive in collaborative environments, measuring progress against their own standards.
- The Maestros: Collaborative + Other-Referenced. Strategic leaders who excel through careful planning and thrive on outperforming opponents within team settings.
- The Soloists: Autonomous + Self-Referenced. Independent performers who prefer autonomy and compete primarily against their own personal bests.
- The Combatants: Autonomous + Other-Referenced. Competitive warriors driven by the intensity of direct, head-to-head challenges.
Understanding the 4-Letter Code
Each sport profile is identified by a 4-letter code (e.g., EOTC, ISRA). Reading left to right:
- Position 1: E (Extrinsic) or I (Intrinsic) , Drive
- Position 2: O (Other-Referenced) or S (Self-Referenced) , Competitive Style
- Position 3: T (Tactical) or R (Reactive) , Cognitive Approach
- Position 4: C (Collaborative) or A (Autonomous) , Social Style

Validity & Methodology
The SportPersonalities assessment is grounded in established psychometric principles and sport psychology research.
Internal Consistency
The assessment demonstrates strong internal consistency across all four scales (Cronbach's α acceptable to good), meaning items within each scale measure the same underlying construct reliably. A formal test-retest study with a US university partner is planned for 2026.
Construct Validity
The four underlying dimensions (Drive, Competitive Style, Cognitive Approach, Social Style) have been validated against established sport psychology constructs and show meaningful correlations with athlete behaviour in competitive settings.
Research Basis
The assessment framework draws from established personality theories adapted specifically for athletic populations, including trait theory, cognitive-behavioural models, and sport-specific motivation research.
Supplemental Assessments
The Mental Toughness, Perfectionism, and Leadership Style scales have been developed using validated psychometric instruments adapted for sport contexts.
