Not sure what volleyball position you should play? Most players get placed by height: the tall ones go to the net, the short ones go to the back row. Height matters, but each position also asks for a different mindset. This free quiz matches how you think and what you enjoy on court to one of five indoor positions. It takes 24 questions and about five minutes, and your full result is free.
What the volleyball position quiz measures
Your answers are scored on six scales that separate the positions:
- Attack Appetite: do you want the ball when the score is tied and the set is tight?
- Floor Defense Drive: do you enjoy diving for a hard-driven ball and passing serve receive?
- Court Command: do you organize teammates with your voice, or prefer to focus on your own job?
- Net Duel: does the blocking battle with the opposing hitter fire you up?
- Unseen Work Tolerance: can you play a great match without a single kill and still feel satisfied?
- Game Planning: do you think two touches ahead, or play best when you simply react?
The 5 volleyball positions in this quiz
- Setter: takes the second touch on almost every rally and decides who attacks, which suits planners who like organizing others.
- Outside Hitter: passes serve receive, digs and takes the most swings from the left side, which suits all-rounders who still want the big kill.
- Opposite Hitter: attacks from the right side, blocks the other team’s outside hitter and often gets the ball in tight moments, which suits pure scorers.
- Middle Blocker: reads the opposing setter, closes the block and runs quick attacks, which suits athletes who love the battle at the net and keep working without the ball.
- Libero / Defensive Specialist: passes, digs and organizes the back row without attacking above the net, which suits players who want the hardest ball and need no spotlight.
Each result comes with strengths, watch-outs, real drills for your position and a simple plan for this week, this month and this season.
An honest note about size and skill
This quiz measures psychological fit only. Coaches also choose positions by height, reach, vertical jump, speed, ball control and what the roster needs, so your result cannot promise you a spot. Use it to learn what you enjoy, to choose which skills to build, and to start a better conversation with your coach about where you want to grow.

What Volleyball Position Should I Play?
This quiz matches your mindset to the indoor volleyball position that fits it. Across 24 statements it profiles six things that separate positions: your appetite for attacking, your love of floor defense, how much you organize others, how much you enjoy the blocking duel, how well you handle unseen work, and how far ahead you plan. You get one of five positions, with strengths, watch-outs and drills to start this week.
About This Assessment
Which Volleyball Position Fits How You Think?
Coaches pick volleyball positions by height, reach, jump and touch, and those things matter a lot. Yet two players of the same height can thrive in very different roles, because each position asks for a different mindset. A setter has to plan and organize. A libero has to love the dig nobody notices. An opposite has to want the ball when the set is tight.
This quiz looks only at that psychological side. It shows which position matches what you enjoy and how you think, so you can tell your coach where you want to grow, or understand why one role already feels right.
What You'll Discover
Your result is one of five indoor positions:
- Setter: the playmaker who takes the second touch and decides who attacks
- Outside Hitter: the left-side all-rounder who passes, digs and takes the most swings
- Opposite Hitter: the right-side scorer and blocker who often gets the ball in tight moments
- Middle Blocker: the net specialist who reads the setter, closes the block and runs quick attacks
- Libero / Defensive Specialist: the back-row specialist who passes, digs and organizes the defense

The Science Behind It
An honest note first: this is a new self-report quiz, and it has not been validated. We have not yet tested whether its results predict which position players succeed in, so treat your result as an informed starting point.
The quiz is built on the SportDNA framework and on well-established ideas in sport psychology. Game Planning reflects the Cognitive Approach pillar, the difference between athletes who prefer to read and plan and those who prefer to react. Court Command reflects the Social Style pillar, from organizing others to working alone. Net Duel and Attack Appetite reflect Competitive Style, the pull toward beating a direct opponent. Unseen Work Tolerance draws on Drive, and on the long-studied difference between motivation that comes from the task itself and motivation that comes from rewards and recognition. Each position in volleyball asks for a different mix of these, and the quiz matches your mix to the closest one.
What to Expect
You will respond to 24 first-person statements on a five-point agreement scale. Each one describes a concrete volleyball moment, for example: 'When the score is tied late in a set, I want the setter to give me the ball,' or 'After a long rally, the dig I made stays with me longer than any point I scored.' Answer from your real reactions and the scoring does the rest.
How to Use Your Results
Use your result in three ways. First, share it with your coach in one sentence, such as 'I really enjoy the blocking battle', so they know where your motivation sits. Second, use the drills in your action plan to build the skills your position needs, even if you are not playing it yet. Third, if you play a different position today, read the result for your current role as well, because every position borrows habits from the others. Coaches can run the quiz with a whole team to start a conversation about roles before tryouts or a new season.
