Tactical athletes appraise the sheer informational chaos of 41 sports as the primary threat. Their whole system runs on preparation depth, and a Games schedule that shifts venues, transport times, and even meal windows on short notice attacks their sense of control directly. Reactive athletes, by contrast, often find the same chaos energizing, they thrive on ambiguity, but they can struggle with the extended, multi-week format that rewards sustained routine over improvisational bursts.
Other-Referenced athletes scan the mega-event environment for rivals constantly, and in a village with athletes from 45 nations, that scanning becomes exhausting fast, sometimes tipping into hypervigilance that reads as threat rather than motivating challenge. Self-Referenced athletes tend to appraise the same environment more calmly because their metric of success never left their own performance standard, though they can underestimate how much a continental Games atmosphere pulls at their usual internal focus.
Extrinsically driven athletes tend to experience the media saturation and medal-table narrative of a Games as validating fuel, provided they've built enough structure to avoid attentional drift. Intrinsically driven athletes can find that same media apparatus intrusive, appraising public attention as a threat to the internal experience that normally sustains them. And Autonomous athletes frequently list the village's forced proximity, shared rooms, shared buses, shared everything, as their single biggest threat appraisal of the entire Games, while Collaborative athletes report the opposite: isolation from teammates competing in other sports is what destabilizes them.
None of these reactions are wrong. They're predictable, once you know the architecture underneath them.
What Threat Appraisal Actually Looks Like Across Sport Profiles
Let's get specific, because vague reassurance ("just stay positive") is exactly the kind of generic advice this framework exists to replace.
The Record-Breaker (ESTA)
The Record-Breaker thrives on measurable proof that systematic work produces external results. At a mega-event, their threat appraisal spikes around schedule disruption, because disrupted schedules threaten the precision they've built their entire preparation around. The fix isn't telling them to relax. It's giving them a modified, mega-event-specific version of their normal system: a laminated card with three backup meal times, two backup warm-up locations, and a pre-decided response for each. Control the variables you can control, and the ones you can't stop mattering so much.
The Rival (EOTA)
The Rival appraises the sheer number of unfamiliar competitors as a tactical void. Normally they've studied opponents carefully; at a continental Games, half the field might be athletes they've never scouted. This reads as threat because their competitive identity runs on informational advantage. The solution is reframing scouting itself as the challenge to solve, treating unfamiliar opponents as a puzzle rather than a gap, which converts their anxiety into their preferred currency: preparation.
The Anchor (ISTC)
The Anchor finds mega-events genuinely destabilizing when team cohesion gets diluted across a massive, multi-sport delegation where they barely see their usual training partners. Their threat isn't the competition itself, it's the erosion of the collaborative structure that normally holds their confidence together. Deliberately scheduling small check-ins with two or three trusted teammates, even a ten-minute coffee, restores enough of that structure to shift appraisal back toward challenge.
The Duelist (IOTA)
The Duelist generally handles mega-event chaos better than most sport profiles because their intrinsic drive and tactical mind don't depend on external validation to function. Their vulnerability shows up differently: when their specific rival isn't present or is competing in a different sub-event bracket, they can lose the sharpened focus that head-to-head confrontation usually provides. Naming a personal standard as a substitute target, a specific time, a specific execution quality, keeps their appraisal system engaged.
The Sparkplug (ESRC)
The Sparkplug often appraises the mega-event stage itself as pure challenge, they access clarity precisely when stakes rise. Their risk is different: sustaining that heightened state across a multi-week Games without burning out before their actual event date arrives. Pacing their emotional intensity, deliberately, is the underdeveloped skill here.

Telling a Collaborative athlete to "focus only on yourself" strips away the exact social scaffolding that keeps their appraisal system in challenge mode. The Real Takeaway
Aichi-Nagoya will overwhelm plenty of talented athletes who show up with generic mental skills and no map of their own psychological terrain.
